Case IH 1031 – Central Controller (XCM) / Electronic Draft Control (EDC) / Hitch Controller: Chassis harness disconnected

Issue description

The control module has detected a complete loss of communication or an open circuit between the main chassis wiring harness and the controller. Older generations of these tractors may display this same error as a two-digit code (Error Code 31).

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Magnum (235-340 Series 4)
  • Steiger
  • Puma (T6000/SWB)
  • Maxxum (135, 145, 150)
  • Farmall (115U Pro EP, 95U, 105U)

Check the cause

  1. Locate the main chassis harness connectors (often designated as C019 and C020) that plug into the XCM or EDC.

  2. Ensure the chassis harness connector is actually plugged in and check for physical damage to the connector housing.

  3. Disconnect the harness and verify that no pins are bent, corroded, or pushed out of their correct positions inside the connector block.

  4. Use a digital multi-meter to check the chassis harness for open circuits or shorts to ground/power across the main communication lines.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness repair.

  2. Clean and Reseat

If the diagnostic check reveals dirt or moisture in the chassis harness connectors (C019/C020), clean the contacts thoroughly with an approved electrical contact cleaner. Reconnect the harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the continuity test reveals a broken wire within the chassis harness, splice and repair the affected wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section entirely.

  4. Replace Controller

If the harness and connectors test perfectly but the code persists, the Central Controller (XCM) or EDC module itself has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  5. Clear and Calibrate

Once the physical repair is made, use the tractor's display or a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the error code. Test the system (including the hydraulic lift and draft controls) for normal operation.
