Case IH 1032 – Hitch Controller: Ground speed failure, value received from CAN data bus indicates failure condition

Issue description

The data bus signaled that the transmission speed sensor (or radar ground speed sensor) has failed. The instrumentation controller detected the failure and broadcasted a fault message over the CAN data bus, which was received by the hitch controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check the instrument cluster for active faults directly related to the transmission speed sensor (such as code 3010).

  2. Inspect sensor connector ends for damaged, bent, corroded, or dislocated pins, and check for open circuits or wiring shorts between the sensor and the instrument cluster.

  3. Test the wheel/transmission speed sensor resistance (a healthy magnetic wheel speed sensor should read between 2700 to 3300 ohms).

  4. If equipped with a radar sensor, check power supply at the radar connector Pin C (should be about 5 VDC in 'RUN' position) and ensure Pin A has good continuity to a clean ground. Test radar function by moving a hand quickly in front of it.

  5. Verify that the instrument controller and hitch controller are communicating properly over the CAN bus.

Repair steps

  1. Power Cycle

    Cycle the tractor's key switch OFF, then ON. Check if the fault code clears or remains active.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the transmission speed sensor on the transmission casing (or the radar unit under the cab/chassis).

  3. Disconnect and Inspect

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the sensor. Inspect the weather-pack terminal plug for moisture or dirt.

  4. Verify Sensor Failure

    Perform the resistance test (2700–3300 ohms). If the sensor is out of specification or internally shorted/open, it must be replaced.

  5. Remove the Faulty Sensor

    Unbolt and remove the speed sensor from the transmission housing.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the pre-installed synthetic rubber O-ring on the new sensor to ensure a leak-free seal against the transmission casing port. Insert the sensor and secure it.

  7. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use the tractor's diagnostic menu or a service tool to erase the stored fault codes in both the instrument cluster and the hitch controller.

  9. Test Drive

    Operate the tractor to verify that the speedometer reads correctly and the hitch controller no longer logs the 1032 fault.
