Case IH 1032 – Hitch / Electronic Draft Control (EDC) module: Draft control potentiometer - voltage too high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the draft control potentiometer that exceeds the normal operating parameters. This is typically caused by a damaged potentiometer (internal short) or a wiring harness short circuit to a positive voltage source (+12V or +Ve).

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the draft control potentiometer (located on the rear hitch/rockshaft assembly) for any visible damage, rubbing, or corrosion.

  2. Voltage Testing: Use a multimeter with a back probe kit or a breakout harness to check the voltage at the potentiometer connector.

  3. Short Circuit Check: Test the signal wire for a short to +12V power.

  4. Reference Voltage Check: Verify that the 5V or 8V reference voltage and ground connections to the sensor are intact and within specification. Disconnecting the sensor should default the system to a halt condition; if the voltage remains high on the signal wire while unplugged, the harness is shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to protect the EDC module.

  2. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If diagnostics revealed a short to power in the wiring harness, locate the rubbed/shorted section and repair the wiring.

  3. Sensor Replacement

    If the wiring is intact and the sensor is internally shorted, disconnect the wiring harness from the draft control potentiometer.

  4. Removal

    Unbolt and remove the faulty draft control potentiometer from the hitch control linkage assembly.

  5. Installation

    Install the new draft control potentiometer and secure it to the linkage. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

    Turn the key on and use the tractor's monitor or H-Menu to perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration / Hitch Calibration. This step is strictly required so the EDC module can learn the minimum and maximum voltage limits of the new sensor.
