1036

Case IH 1036 – Hitch Controller / Universal Control Module (UCM): The ARU reports EDC Inching Up switch faulty or not available.

Issue description

The Armrest Unit (ARU) / Armrest Controller has detected a failure in the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) Inching Up switch circuit. The signal is either out of range, shorted, or completely lost. The Tractor Universal Control Module (UCM) receives this failure notification over the CAN data bus from the armrest controller, disabling the hitch's inching up function.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Magnum 235 - 340 Series 4
  • MX Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the EDC Inching Up switch on the armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing full travel.

  2. Check the switch wiring connectors to ensure they are fully seated, undamaged, and have a tight fit with correct pin positions.

  3. Perform a harness continuity test between the switch and the Armrest Unit (ARU) to check for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  4. Verify CAN data bus communication lines are intact and operating at correct voltages (typically 2.4V - 2.5V for CAN High/Low).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Switch

Carefully remove the necessary trim panels or covers on the armrest console to access the underside of the EDC switch assembly.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the faulty EDC Inching Up switch.

  4. Remove and Replace

Depress the retaining tabs or remove the mounting screws holding the switch in the armrest bezel. Pull the faulty switch out and snap/screw the new OEM replacement switch into place.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new switch, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  6. Reassemble

Reinstall the armrest trim panels and covers.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery ground. Turn the key on and use the tractor's display or an Electronic Service Tool to clear the inactive fault code. Cycle the hitch position lever and test the inching up switch to confirm proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
