Case IH 1037 – Hitch Controller / Tractor Universal Control Module (UCM): Draft control inching down switch failure
Issue description
The Armrest Unit (ARU) reports that the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) inching down switch is faulty, missing, or its signal is unavailable. This typically points to an electrical open circuit, a short circuit, or a mechanical failure inside the switch itself, preventing the operator from making fine downward adjustments to the rear hitch.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Magnum
- Steiger T4B
- Steiger
- Puma
Check the cause
Verify if the fault code is currently active or stored as a historic/pending code
Inspect the EDC inching down switch on the armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing normal movement
Remove the armrest cover and inspect the harness connector at the switch. Ensure the pins are in the correct position, not damaged, and the fit is tight
Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test it for continuity. The switch should show a closed circuit when pressed and an open circuit when released
If the switch tests good, check the wiring harness between the switch and the Armrest Unit (ARU) for a short to ground, short to power (12V or 5V reference), or an open circuit
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Switch
Remove the retaining screws or clips holding the armrest control console bezel/cover in place.
Disconnect
Carefully lift the panel to expose the wiring underneath. Locate the EDC inching down switch and unplug its electrical harness connector.
Remove the Switch
Squeeze the plastic retaining tabs on the sides of the faulty switch (or remove its mounting screws, depending on the exact cab configuration) and push it out of the armrest bezel.
Install the New Part
Snap the new OEM inching switch into the bezel until it seats firmly.
Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new switch. Reinstall the armrest console cover and secure the screws.
Test and Clear
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the tractor's diagnostic display or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 1037 fault code. Test the hitch inching down function to verify the repair.
