Case IH 1040 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Aux 2nd remote valve Timer Switch is failed in the Armrest Controller

Issue description

The Armrest Controller is receiving an out-of-range signal, an open/short circuit, or a configuration mismatch from the specific auxiliary remote valve switch (either the Extend Limit Set switch or the 2nd Remote Timer switch).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285
  • TG210
  • TG230

  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series 430
  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series 435
  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series 450
  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series 485
  • Steiger / STX 4WD Series 530
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the tractor's software is correctly configured for the number of remotes installed (bad configuration can trigger this code).

  2. Enter diagnostic mode using the diagnostic test switch (Special Tool #380000843) in tractor diagnostic connector X030.

  3. Run switch tests using the Armrest Controller's 'H5 - Switch operation test' or 'H9 - Voltmeter diagnostic' menus to see if the controller registers physical inputs from the switch.

  4. Inspect the connector ends at the Armrest Controller for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins.

  5. Check for accompanying bus errors (e.g., code 12011 - Communication Lost With Armrest Controller) which indicate a total module failure rather than an isolated switch failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts or CAN-bus spikes.

  2. Disassemble the Armrest

Remove the trim panels and retaining screws on the right-hand armrest console to expose the Armrest Controller and the switch blocks.

  3. Isolate the Switch

Disconnect the wiring harness leading to the auxiliary remote switch block.

  4. Replace the Component

If the switch is modular: Unclip the faulty Extend Limit / Timer switch from the bezel and snap the replacement into place. If the switch is integrated: Replace the Core-Printed Circuit or the entire Armrest Controller assembly.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Reinstall the armrest trim and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibrate

Turn the key on, enter the diagnostic menu, clear the inactive fault codes, and perform the Armrest Controller Calibration procedure so the main vehicle CAN-bus recognizes the new hardware.
