Case IH 1041 – Engine Controller (ECU) or Instrument Cluster (IC): RPM Monitoring Over Speed Max
Issue description
The engine RPM signal has exceeded the maximum recommended operation range (engine RPM above 3,000 for 5 seconds). This can be caused by actual mechanical overspeed (such as traveling downhill with a heavy load), a faulty speed sensor sending erratic signals, or an internal failure within the engine controller.
Applies to these machines
11 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- TR270
- Tractors
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- Backhoe Loaders
- 580 Super N
Check the cause
Verify operating conditions to determine if the machine was recently operated in a way that could cause a genuine engine overspeed (e.g., steep downhill travel with a heavy implement).
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if fault code 1041 is currently active or if it is an intermittent/historical code.
Inspect the Crankshaft Speed Sensor and Camshaft Speed Sensor for physical damage, proper gap alignment, and ensure the magnetic pickup is free of metallic debris.
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the speed sensors to the Engine Controller for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.
Repair steps
Clear and Test
If the overspeed was caused by operator error, clear the code using the EST and test-run the machine to ensure the code does not return.
Replace Sensors
If diagnostic testing reveals erratic signals from the speed sensors (and the wiring is intact), replace the Crankshaft Speed Sensor and/or Camshaft Speed Sensor.
Replace the Engine Controller (ECU)
If the fault persists and the EST indicates an ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) failure or internal ECU error ("Signal Above Range Max"), the Engine Controller must be replaced.
Restore Parameters
If the Engine Controller is replaced, you must use the EST to reload the engine dataset and perform the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters.
