Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the trailer brake pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold (typically >4.5V on a 5V reference circuit). This condition is almost always caused by the sensor's signal wire being shorted to a high-voltage source, an open circuit on the sensor's ground wire, an internal failure of the pressure sensor itself, or an internal fault within the control module.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ITBV module to the trailer brake pressure sensor. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connectors.

  2. Ground Circuit Test: Disconnect the sensor. Using a multimeter, check for continuity between the sensor connector's ground pin and the chassis ground. High resistance or an open circuit will cause a high voltage code.

  3. Short-to-Power Test: With the key ON (engine off) and the sensor disconnected, measure the voltage on the signal return wire. If it reads 5V or 12V, the signal wire is shorted to a power source in the harness.

  4. Supply Voltage Test: Verify the supply pin at the connector is providing the correct reference voltage (typically exactly 5.0V).

  5. Sensor Bypass/Test: If the wiring harness tests perfectly (good ground, proper 5V supply, and no short on the signal wire), the fault is internal to the pressure sensor.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the parking brake is applied. Relieve all pneumatic/hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake lines before servicing.

  2. Locate the ITBV Assembly

    The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve is typically mounted near the rear axle valving stack or trailer coupling area.

  3. Disconnect Electrical Connections

    Unplug the wiring harness from the ITBV ECU and the specific control line pressure sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor (If serviceable separately)

    Unthread the pressure sensor from the ITBV block. Clean the port threads, install the new sensor with a new O-ring, and torque to OEM specifications.

  5. Replace the ITBV Assembly (If sensor is integrated)

    Disconnect the hydraulic/pneumatic tubes (e.g., the tube running from the solenoid to the ITBV). Unbolt the ITBV assembly from its mounting bracket. Install the new ITBV assembly (Part # 51451065) and reconnect all lines.

  6. Reassembly & Bleeding

    Reconnect the electrical harnesses. If hydraulic lines were opened, bleed the trailer brake circuit according to the service manual to remove air.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 1043-03 fault code and perform a functional test of the trailer brakes.
