Case IH 1043-04 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Control Line Pressure Sensor Supply Voltage Below Normal / Shorted to Low Source

Issue description

The control module has detected that the supply voltage circuit to the trailer brake control line pressure sensor is dropping below the acceptable threshold (typically a +5V reference circuit). This usually indicates a short to ground in the wiring harness, a failed sensor pulling the voltage down, or a fault within the controller itself.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a Key-Off Reset by turning the keyless engine switch to the OFF position to see if the code is active or stored.

  2. Visually inspect the hydraulic/pneumatic trailer brake wire harness for chafing, corrosion, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

  3. Disconnect the trailer brake pressure sensor, turn the key ON, and measure the supply voltage pin at the connector (should read a steady +5 VDC reference voltage).

  4. If the voltage is correct when unplugged but drops significantly when the sensor is plugged back in, the sensor is internally shorted.

  5. If the voltage is low while the sensor is unplugged, trace the wire back to the ITBV module and check the pin output directly at the controller to determine if the module is defective.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the trailer brake pressure sensor on the trailer brake valve assembly (ITBV).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected sub-harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the sensor was found to be internally shorted, unthread the old sensor from the valve block. Install the new sensor (ensure the O-ring or sealing washer is seated correctly) and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Replace the ITBV Module

    If the module itself has failed and is not supplying voltage, remove the mounting hardware and harness connectors from the ITBV controller, install the replacement module, and flash/program it with the correct software (e.g., software part number 51595354 for Magnum series).

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and clear the fault codes. Actuate the trailer brakes to ensure the pressure sensor reads correctly and the 1043-04 code does not return.
