Case IH 1044-06 - UCM – UCM: Electro-hydraulic backup pump current high

Issue description

The system has detected that the electrical current (amperage) being drawn by the electro-hydraulic backup pump circuit is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold. This typically indicates a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, a seized pump motor, or an internal short within the pump's electric motor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes: Verify if the UCM is throwing related backup pump codes, such as 1044-05 (Current low), 1044-07 (Hydraulic system failure), or 1044-14 (Incorrect configuration).

  2. Inspect fuses: Check the master fuse panel for a blown high-amperage fuse dedicated to the backup hydraulic pump.

  3. Harness inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the UCM to the electro-hydraulic backup pump. Look for pinched wires, chafed insulation rubbing against the tractor frame, or melted wires causing a short to ground.

  4. Connector check: Disconnect the plug at the backup pump and inspect the pins for water ingress, dirt, or corrosion, which can bridge connections and cause high current readings.

  5. Motor resistance test: With the pump disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pump motor's terminals. A reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates an internal dead short.

Repair steps

  1. Safely prep the machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and wait for the DEF system to purge (if applicable) before disconnecting the negative battery terminal.

  2. Isolate the fault

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the electro-hydraulic backup pump.

  3. Test the harness

    Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. If the 1044-06 code changes to a 1044-05 (Current low / Open circuit) with the pump unplugged, the wiring harness is intact, and the fault is isolated to the pump itself. If the high current code persists or the fuse blows again while unplugged, the wiring harness is shorted to ground and must be repaired or replaced.

  4. Replace the pump (if internally shorted)

    Unbolt the defective electro-hydraulic backup pump from its mounting bracket. Disconnect the hydraulic inlet and outlet lines, capping them immediately to prevent contamination. Install the new pump, reconnect the hydraulic lines, and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Replace fuses

    Replace any blown backup pump fuses in the master fuse block.

  6. Clear codes and test

    Reconnect the battery, power on the AFS Connect display, clear the UCM fault codes, and cycle the key to allow the UCM to run its startup test on the backup pump. Verify the code does not return.
