Case IH 1044 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) or Instrument Cluster / Cab Controller: Fuel level sensor below 2.0 ohm for 5 seconds, shorted low

Issue description

The controller is detecting that the electrical resistance from the fuel level sensor circuit has dropped below 2.0 ohms for a continuous period of 5 seconds. This indicates a direct path to ground, meaning there is either a short to ground in the wiring harness or the fuel level sensor itself has failed internally and shorted out.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the fuel tank for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the frame that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Perform a sensor disconnect test: disconnect the electrical connector at the fuel level sensor and turn the key ON. If the code changes to 1045, the sensor is internally shorted. If 1044 remains, the harness is shorted.

  3. Perform a harness continuity test: if the harness is suspected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the sensor signal wire and chassis ground with both ends unplugged.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the fuel level sender unit on the top or side of the fuel tank.

    Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the fuel tank.

  3. Disconnect the electrical pigtail/connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the mounting screws or the locking ring securing the sensor to the fuel tank.

  5. Carefully pull the old sensor assembly out of the tank.

    Take care not to bend the float arm or drop debris into the fuel.

  6. Install the new fuel level sensor with a new gasket/O-ring to prevent leaks.

  7. Secure the mounting screws/locking ring.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  9. Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that fault code 1044 has cleared (or moved to an inactive/stored state).
