Case IH 1045 – ALL: Fuel Level Sensor Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is detecting an incomplete electrical path (infinite resistance) in the fuel level sensor circuit. This underlying condition is typically caused by a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or a completely failed internal resistor within the fuel tank sender unit.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Steiger 4WD Tractors
  • Puma Series Tractors
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Case Loader Backhoes
  • 580 Super N
  • MX Utility tractors
  • JX Utility tractors
  • CX Utility tractors

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the fuel tank sender unit for disconnected plugs, corrosion, or severed wires.

  2. Test the wiring harness for continuity between the sensor connector and the instrument cluster/controller to rule out a broken wire.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (ohms) across the terminals of the fuel level sensor. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Sensor

Locate the fuel level sensor (sender unit) mounted on the top or side of the fuel tank.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, splice and repair the wiring harness. If the wiring is intact, proceed to replace the sensor.

  4. Remove the Old Sensor

Remove the mounting hardware (typically a grounding nut, lock washers, and flat washers). Carefully pull the old sender unit out of the fuel tank.

  5. Install the New Sensor

Insert the replacement OEM fuel level sensor. Always use a new gasket to prevent fuel leaks or contamination.

  6. Reconnect

Secure the mounting hardware and plug the electrical connector back in.

  7. Verify

Turn the machine's key to the ON position to verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that fault code 1045 is cleared from the dash/display.
