1051

Case IH 1051 – Instrument Cluster (IC), Armrest/CAB module, or main vehicle controller: No CAN Communication With Engine Controller

Issue description

The main vehicle network (CAN bus) has experienced a timeout—specifically, the system has gone 5 seconds without receiving a required message (such as EEC1) from the engine controller.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Steiger 500
  • Steiger 535
  • Steiger 620
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 220
  • Magnum 240
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Puma 140
  • Farmall 110A
  • Farmall 115U
  • Farmall 120A
  • AFX8010
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

Check the cause

  1. Check the communication BUS wiring (inlet/exhaust) between the engine controller and the instrument cluster for rubbing, chafing, cuts, or corrosion

  2. Verify that the Engine ECU is receiving proper 12V power and ground

  3. Check the CAN bus data lines (yellow and green wires) for approximately 2.4V to 2.5V

  4. Check the CAN bus terminating resistors at each end of the CAN circuit

  5. Disconnect the ECU and check for bad, loose, or corroded connector pins

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Fault

Use a multimeter to test the CAN bus circuit for continuity and verify the resistance across the CAN high and CAN low pins (should typically read 60 ohms if both 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact).

  2. Repair Wiring/Resistors

If a broken wire is found, repair the harness. If a terminating resistor is out of spec, replace the terminator (often located at the ends of the harness, such as under the air filter or behind the controllers depending on the model).

  3. Replace the Engine Controller

If the wiring harness, power, ground, and terminators are all in good working order, the Engine Controller itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced or sent out for reconditioning.

  4. Programming (If Replacing ECU)

If installing a blank replacement ECU, the engine will not start immediately. You must use the Electronic Service Tool (E.A.Sy Engine Diagnostic and Download Tool) to perform a "Blank ECU Initialization" and download the correct operating file (Dataset) that matches your specific engine serial number.
