Case IH 1053 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) module, Hitch Controller, or XCM (Multi-function Control Module): 5 volt reference - short to +12 volt
Issue description
The 5-volt reference circuit generated by the control module to power various sensors is improperly receiving battery voltage (12 volts). This is typically caused by a wiring harness chafe or a sensor that has failed internally and is bridging 12V power into the 5V circuit.

Check the cause
Disconnect EDC sensors (draft pins, hitch position potentiometers, drop rate/sensitivity potentiometers) one at a time. If the code changes to 1054 or 1059, the disconnected sensor is internally shorted.
Turn the key ON and use a multimeter to probe the 5V reference pin at the sensor connectors. If it reads ~12 volts, the short is active in the harness.
Trace the wiring harness from the EDC/XCM controller to the rear hitch sensors. Inspect for pinch points, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the chassis, transmission housing, or moving hitch components.
Disconnect the main harness from the EDC/XCM controller and check for continuity between the 5V reference wire and any 12V supply wires. Continuity confirms a harness short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent module damage during repair.
Locate the Short
Based on your diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of failure (either the internally shorted sensor or the damaged wiring harness).
Repair the Harness
If wires are chafed, carefully open the wire loom. Cut out the damaged sections of the 5V and 12V wires. Splice in new wire using proper solder and weather-sealed heat shrink tubing. Do not use cheap crimp connectors, as they will corrode in agricultural environments.
Replace Sensors (If Applicable)
If a draft pin or position potentiometer was the source of the short, unbolt and replace the sensor.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all sensors and the battery. Turn the key ON and verify that code 1053 is no longer active.
Recalibrate
Perform a Hitch Auto-Calibration (Code 1024 may appear prompting this) to ensure the EDC module relearns the upper and lower limits of the hitch potentiometers.
