Case IH 1054 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Timeout of CAN Message ET1
Issue description
The Instrument Cluster (IC) has stopped receiving the expected Engine Temperature 1 (ET1) CAN bus message from the Engine Control Unit (ECU) over the J1939 CAN network, which contains critical Engine Coolant Temperature and Engine Fuel Temperature data.

Check the cause
Press the 'ENTER' button twice on the cluster to acknowledge and reset the code. If it returns immediately, proceed with hard diagnostics.
Check for concurrent CAN codes (e.g., 1051, 1053, 1059) to determine if only the ET1 message is missing or if the entire CAN bus is down.
Connect a diagnostic tool to the Deutsch HD10-9-1939 port to verify if the Engine ECU is broadcasting other standard frames (like EEC1 or LFE1).
Check for related P-codes, specifically P0600 (Serial Communication Link), which indicates a physical wiring or hardware failure on the CAN receive circuit.
Repair steps
Inspect the J1939 Network
Locate the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the Instrument Cluster (IC).
Check for Physical Damage
Inspect the harness for chafing, corrosion, or backed-out pins that would interrupt the CAN High or CAN Low serial communication lines.
Verify Sensor Integrity
Verify the physical Engine Coolant Temperature and Fuel Temperature sensors and their direct wiring to the Engine ECU.
Module Replacement/Reflash
If the wiring harness is intact and the ECU is failing to broadcast the ET1 message (or the IC is failing to receive it), the Engine ECU or Instrument Cluster may require a software update or replacement by a dealer.
