Case IH 1056-00 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Control Line Pressure Disagreement - Pressure High

Issue description

The system's plausibility checks have detected that the actual pressure on the trailer brake control line is reading higher than the commanded (demanded) pressure. This usually points to a stuck valve, a restricted return line trapping pressure, or a failing pressure sensor reading artificially high.

Check the cause

  1. Check the power supply fuses associated with the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (e.g., F-030 [10A] for ITBV UNSW B+, or F-601 / F-602 [15A] for pneumatic controllers)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ITBV, pressure sensors, and main tractor harness for shorts to power or ground at the Inlet Valve (IV) and Outlet Valve (OV)

  3. Perform a sensor plausibility check using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the Service Brake Sensor voltage and TCV pressure sensor supply. Verify if it reads high pressure even when the brake pedal is completely released

  4. Inspect hydraulic or pneumatic lines for physical blockages, kinks, or blocked return ports that could cause pressure to become trapped in the control line

Repair steps

  1. Safely Park the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Safely relieve any residual hydraulic or pneumatic pressure in the trailer braking system by pumping the brakes with the engine off before disconnecting any lines.

  3. Access the ITBV

    Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly (typically mounted near the rear axle/remotes or under the right-hand cab area, depending on the specific chassis).

  4. Replace Faulty Sensor/Harness

    If EST diagnostics point to a failed pressure sensor, disconnect the electrical connector, unthread the sensor, and install the new one. If the harness is damaged, replace the affected section.

  5. Replace the ITBV (if internal failure)

    If the inlet/outlet valves inside the ITBV are internally shorted or mechanically stuck open (causing the high pressure), disconnect the hydraulic/pneumatic lines and electrical connectors. Unbolt the ITBV assembly and install the replacement unit.

  6. Bleed the System

    If hydraulic lines were opened, bleed the trailer brake circuit according to the service manual to remove air.

  7. Calibrate

    Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), clear the fault codes, and perform the ITBV calibration procedure to ensure the new valve or sensor is recognized and operates within the correct pressure thresholds.
