Case IH 1058 – Instrument Cluster (IC) or Universal Control Module (UCM): Timeout of CAN Message EDC2BC
Issue description
The CAN (Controller Area Network) bus has gone 5 seconds without receiving the expected EDC2BC communication message, which triggers an Amber warning telltale lamp.

Check the cause
Verify the presence of the Amber warning lamp and confirm the 1058 code is active.
Check the CAN bus communication lines between the Engine Controller and the Instrument Cluster/UCM.
Verify that the Engine Controller is receiving proper power and ground (a dead ECU cannot send CAN messages).
Inspect the wiring harness for any signs of chafing, breaks, or shorts (to power or ground).
Check the connectors at both the Engine Controller and the Instrument Cluster for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect battery power before servicing the electrical system.
Locate modules
Locate the Engine Controller (ECU) and the Instrument Cluster/UCM.
Inspect and clean connectors
Disconnect the harness connectors at both modules. Inspect the pins and clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.
Perform continuity test
Using a digital multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ECU and the Instrument Cluster.
Test for shorts
Test the CAN wires for a short to ground or short to power.
Verify terminating resistors
Verify the terminating resistors on the CAN bus are intact (the CAN bus should typically read around 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low when the battery is disconnected).
Repair or replace wiring
Repair or replace any damaged sections of the wiring harness or faulty connector pins.
Reconnect and clear codes
Reconnect all modules, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes using a service tool.
Verify repair and replace modules if necessary
Run the machine to verify if the code returns. If the wiring is perfectly intact, power/ground are verified, and the code persists, the Engine Controller or Instrument Cluster has likely failed internally and will require replacement and dealer reprogramming.
