Case IH 1059 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) module / Hitch Controller: 8 volt reference error (draft load pins)
Issue description
The draft load pins measure horizontal draft shear forces and require a steady 8-volt reference signal from the tractor's control system. Code 1059 is triggered when the controller detects that this 8V reference circuit is out of the expected range, which typically indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EDC controller to the left and right draft load pins for chafing, pinching, and debris damage.
Disconnect the harness at the draft load pins, turn the key ON, and use a multimeter to measure the reference voltage at the harness connector (it should read approximately 8 volts).
If the 8V reference is missing at the connector but present at the EDC controller output, check the wiring harness for a short or break.
If the 8V reference is correct when unplugged but drops significantly when a pin is plugged in, check that specific load pin sensor for an internal short.
Check the sensor connectors for moisture intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.
Repair steps
Safety First
Lower any attached implements to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken or chafed wire, splice and seal the wire using weather-resistant heat shrink, or replace the damaged harness section.
Sensor Removal
If a draft load pin is internally shorted, disconnect the sensor's electrical connector, remove the retaining hardware (snap rings or locking bolts), and slide the faulty draft pin out of the housing.
Sensor Installation
Clean the bore, apply anti-seize if recommended, install the new draft load pin, secure the retaining hardware, and reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring it is routed away from pinch points.
Calibration
After replacing a draft pin or repairing the 8V circuit, perform a hitch calibration procedure via the tractor's display to 'zero' the new load cells (establishing the 'no load' voltage offset).
Alternative Repair
If the tractor is used for operations that do not require draft sensing, install a Draft Load Sensing Pin Elimination Kit to simulate a healthy sensor and bypass the EDC draft function completely.
