Case IH 106 – TRANS: C3-4 clutch solenoid or its wiring failed open or shorted to ground
Issue description
The controller has detected an electrical fault—either a broken connection (open circuit) or a wire touching the chassis/ground (short to ground)—in the circuit responsible for actuating the C3-4 transmission clutch.
Applies to these machines
11 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- MX Magnum series
- TG Series
- Steiger
- Puma
- T8 series
- TG210
- TG230
- TG255
- TG285
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission shift valve block for chafed wires, broken connections, or exposed copper shorting to the tractor's chassis (ground)
Check the transmission neutral latch relay by clearing fault codes, replacing the relay with a known good one, running the tractor, and checking if the code returns
Monitor if the fault occurs only when the tractor reaches operating temperature (indicates the solenoid coil is failing internally)
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, ensure all hydraulic pressures are released, and disconnect the battery.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission shift valve assembly (typically located on the right front side of the speed transmission housing). You may need to remove transmission covers or access panels depending on the specific tractor model.
Disconnect Electricals
Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the C3-4 clutch solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid/Valve
Unbolt the faulty solenoid from the shift valve block. Note: On some Magnum 7100/7200/8900 series, the entire shift valve assembly may need to be removed and disassembled on a bench to inspect the spool valves before replacing the solenoid.
Installation
Install the new C3-4 clutch solenoid (or remanufactured shift valve assembly) and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, reinstall any removed covers, and reconnect the battery.
Testing
Clear the fault codes from the TRANS controller, start the tractor, and test the transmission through its ranges to ensure the C3-4 clutch engages properly without throwing Code 106.
