Case IH 1065 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) Module: EDC Hydraulic Valve Lower Solenoid - Short Circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected a short circuit (either a short to ground or a short to 12V power) in the electrical circuit that controls the solenoid responsible for lowering the rear hitch via the Electronic Draft Control (EDC) hydraulic valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235–340 Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (e.g., 350–600)
  • Case IH Maxxum / MXM Series (e.g., MXM 120–190)
  • Case IH Farmall Series (e.g., 40, 45, 50, 115U)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the EDC/Hitch control module to the rear hydraulic valve block for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points.

  2. Disconnect the lower solenoid connector and check the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge the circuit.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the lower solenoid coil using a multimeter (a healthy 12V DC coil typically reads around 7.3 Ohms; zero or near-zero indicates an internal short).

  4. With the solenoid and the EDC module disconnected, test the harness wires for continuity to ground and continuity to power to isolate a harness short.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the tractor, lower the hitch to the ground (if possible) to relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the EDC hydraulic valve block, typically mounted at the rear of the tractor near the hitch assembly.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the "Lower" solenoid.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (If internally shorted)

Remove the retaining nut or clip holding the solenoid coil to the hydraulic valve stem. Slide the old coil off. Slide the new OEM coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.

  5. Repair Wiring (If harness is shorted)

If the coil tested good but the harness was shorted, cut out the damaged section of wiring and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  6. Reassemble

Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid, ensuring the weather seal is intact.

  7. Test and Clear

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on, clear the stored 1065 fault code via the tractor's diagnostic display/H-Menu, and test the hitch raise/lower functions to verify the repair.
