Case IH 1071 – Hitch Controller: PWM Raise Threshold is Too High During Calibration

During the hitch system calibration, the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) threshold required to start raising the hitch exceeded the maximum allowable limit of 55%. This indicates the controller had to send an unusually high electrical signal to the hitch raise solenoid, pointing to an electrical resistance issue, low voltage, or a mechanical restriction in the valve.

   Check battery voltage to ensure it is fully charged and the alternator is functioning properly

   Inspect the wire harness and connectors between the hitch raise solenoid and the hitch controller for damaged wires, loose pins, or corrosion

   Measure the resistance of the hitch raise solenoid coil to check for failure

   Verify there is no mechanical interference in the hitch linkage preventing it from raising

   Inspect the hitch valve to see if the raise portion is mechanically stuck closed

   Prepare tractor

   Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, turned off, and the battery is fully charged.

   Locate valve block

   Locate the hitch control valve block at the rear of the tractor.

   Inspect and repair wiring

   Disconnect the electrical connector to the hitch raise solenoid and inspect the pins. Clean any corrosion and repair any damaged wiring in the harness.

   Test and replace solenoid coil

   Using a multimeter, test the raise solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification (too high), remove the retaining nut and slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Install a new OEM solenoid coil.

   Inspect and replace hitch valve assembly

   If the electrical circuit and solenoid coil are good, the issue is likely a stuck spool inside the hitch valve block. Remove the hitch valve assembly, inspect the raise valve portion for debris or scoring, and clean it. If the valve is permanently stuck or damaged, replace the entire hitch control valve assembly.

   Reassemble and clear codes

   Reassemble all components, start the tractor, and clear the inactive fault codes.

   Calibrate hitch

   Rerun the electronic hitch calibration procedure to verify the repair.
