Case IH 1074 - UCM – UCM: Left external fender switch open circuit/short to GND

This fault code indicates a circuit failure related to the left external fender switch, which is typically used by the operator to control the rear 3-point hitch (raise/lower) or the PTO from outside the cab. The controller has detected that the signal voltage from this switch is either completely missing (open circuit - such as a broken wire or unplugged connector) or is finding a direct path to ground (short to GND - such as a chafed wire touching the tractor chassis).

   Inspect the left rear fender switch for physical damage, water ingress, mud, and internal corrosion.

   Trace the wiring harness from the left fender switch back to the cab/UCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the fender or chassis, or severed lines (open circuit).

   Disconnect the switch and inspect the electrical connector pins for green corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals.

   Check for continuity to ground on the signal wire using a multimeter to verify if there is a short in the harness.

   Test the switch itself for proper resistance/continuity when the buttons are pressed and unpressed. If the switch reads open regardless of button position, it has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the faulty left external fender switch on the rear left fender housing.

   Disconnect

   Reach behind the fender panel (or remove the protective cover/clip, OEM part #47505757) and unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch.

   Remove the Switch

   Depress the retaining tabs or remove the locking nut holding the switch into the fender bezel, and push the switch out through the front of the fender.

   Install the New Switch

   Push the new OEM switch into the fender cutout until it clicks and locks securely into place.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector into the new switch. Ensure the weather seal is intact and the connector locks.

   Restore Power & Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's diagnostic menu or a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 1074 fault code.

   Test Operation

   Stand clear of the linkage/PTO and test the left fender switch to ensure the 3-point hitch raises/lowers or the PTO engages properly without throwing a new code.
