Case IH 1078 - UCM – UCM / CCM: Right external fender switch short to Vbat

This code indicates that the control module is detecting battery voltage (Vbat / 12V) on the signal circuit for the right-hand external fender switch (typically used for operating the electronic draft control/rear hitch or PTO from outside the cab). A "short to Vbat" means the signal wire is improperly receiving full battery voltage, which is usually caused by an internal short inside the switch itself or a wiring harness failure where the signal wire is rubbing against a live power wire.

   Inspect the right external fender switch for physical damage, cracked housing, or water ingress, which commonly causes internal shorts.

   Trace the wiring harness from the right fender switch back to the UCM/CCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the tractor frame, or exposed copper that could be shorting the signal wire to a 12V power source.

   Disconnect the switch and inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, bent pins, or debris.

   With the switch disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side. If 12V is still present, the short to Vbat is in the wiring harness. If the voltage drops to normal reference levels (or 0V), the switch itself is internally shorted and must be replaced.

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Switch

   Locate the faulty right external fender switch on the rear right fender housing.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch.

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If diagnostics proved the harness was shorted to power, locate the damaged section of the wire, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Remove the Switch

   If the switch is the culprit, remove the retaining clips or hardware holding the switch into the fender bezel.

   Snap or screw the new OEM fender switch into the fender housing.
