Case IH 1079.03 – EPC, ATC, or Engine ECU: 5-volt Power Supply, Voltage Too High
Issue description
The control unit has detected that the voltage on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit is exceeding the normal operating range (typically measuring greater than 5.2V or 5.5V). This confirms that the 5V reference circuit is shorted to a positive supply lead (such as a 12V power source) or that there is an internal hardware malfunction within the control unit itself.

Check the cause
Identify the Affected Circuit: If logged in the EPC, check clutch pedal, accelerator pedal, hand throttle, and enable pressure sensors. If logged in the ATC, check defog sensor, refrigerant pressure sensor, heater valve, and air distribution flap motor.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually examine the wiring harness and connectors leading to the 5-volt components for signs of chafing, melted insulation, corrosion, or improper connections that could cause a short to a 12V power wire.
Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect the sensors on the affected circuit one by one. If the voltage drops back to the normal 5V range after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted. If the voltage remains high with all sensors unplugged, the issue is in the wiring harness or the control unit.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and locate the affected control unit (EPC, ATC, or ECU) and the corresponding sensor harness.
Test the Harness
With the sensors disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the sensor supply pins on the harness.
Trace the Short
If the multimeter reads battery voltage (e.g., 12V) or anything above 5.5V, trace the wiring harness back to the control unit. Look for areas where the harness rubs against the chassis or engine block, causing the 5V wire to short against a 12V supply wire.
Repair Wiring
Splice and repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Test the Control Unit
If the wiring harness is completely intact and tests show no short to power, but the control unit is still outputting >5.5V directly from the 5V pin, the control unit has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
Reassembly and Reset
Reconnect all components. Reset the system to clear the fault code and test all affected components to ensure they are operating correctly within the normal 5V range.
