Case IH 1080.03 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): 5V Reference Voltage 2, voltage too high
Issue description
The control unit has detected that the voltage on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit #2 is above the acceptable specification (greater than 4.95V DC or shorted to battery power).

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the ECU for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to battery positive (+12V).
Perform a wiggle test: With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, connect a scan tool and monitor the 5V Reference 2 voltage. Wiggle the harness near the sensor and along the routing to the ECU to check for intermittent voltage spikes.
Isolate the sensor: Disconnect the 3-pin connector at the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and check the supply pin on the harness side using a multimeter. It should read exactly 5V.
If the voltage on the unplugged harness reads higher than 5V (e.g., 12V battery voltage), the wiring harness is shorted to power (harness cause).
If the harness reads a steady 5V while unplugged, but the code triggers or voltage spikes when plugged in, the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor is internally shorted (sensor cause).
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during repair.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, trace the wire back to the ECU, locate the damaged section, and splice/repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors.
Sensor Replacement (If Applicable)
Clean the area around the fuel rail to prevent dirt from entering the high-pressure fuel system. Unplug the electrical connector from the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. Ensure the fuel system is depressurized, then use a wrench to carefully unthread the old sensor from the fuel rail. Install the new Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the 3-pin electrical connector.
Verification
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition ON, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 1080.03 fault code, and start the engine. Verify that the fuel rail pressure reads correctly and the fault code does not return.
