Case IH 1080.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Supply Voltage Low
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the voltage on the 5-volt sensor supply circuit (specifically circuit 2, which typically powers the fuel rail pressure sensor) has dropped below the minimum acceptable specification. This is almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted sensor pulling the reference voltage down.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Steiger
- Maxxum
- Puma
- combines
Check the cause
Measure the voltage directly at the ECU 5V supply pins (e.g., Pin R3 for 5V supply and P3 for return) to verify if the ECU is actually outputting 5 volts.
Disconnect the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (and any other sensors sharing the 5V Reference 2 circuit) one at a time. If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal at the ECU/harness after unplugging a sensor, that specific sensor is internally shorted and has failed.
If unplugging the sensors does not restore the 5V reference, use a multimeter to check the wiring harness for continuity to ground. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or moisture intrusion in the connectors between the ECU and the fuel rail pressure sensor.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate short
Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the source of the short to ground.
Repair wiring harness
If the wiring is faulty: Repair the rubbed/chafed section of the engine wiring harness. If the connector is damaged or corroded, splice in a new OEM connector pigtail.
Replace sensor
If the sensor is faulty: Remove the defective Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor from the fuel rail. Install the new sensor and torque it to the manufacturer's specification.
Reconnect components
Reconnect the sensor(s) and the battery.
Clear fault code
Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the inactive 1080.04 fault code.
Verify repair
Start the engine and verify that the fuel rail pressure reads correctly and the code does not return.
Parts you might need
(2)Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
OEM Part Number varies by engine (e.g., Cummins/Bosch or FPT). Ensure the sensor matches the specific fuel system (Bosch common rail is most frequent).
Engine Wiring Harness / Sensor Pigtail
Required only if the diagnostic tests prove the short to ground is in the wiring rather than the sensor itself.
