Case IH 1086-03 - UCM – UCM: Pneumatic trailer brake reservoir pressure sensor voltage high.

Issue description

The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the pneumatic trailer brake pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically indicates a short circuit to a power source in the wiring harness, a broken ground wire, or an internal failure (short) within the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the pneumatic trailer brake pressure sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to battery voltage.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins that could bridge the 5V reference/power circuit to the signal return circuit.

  3. With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to verify that the 5V reference circuit has exactly 5 volts and that the ground circuit has good continuity to the chassis.

  4. Check the signal wire for voltage while disconnected. If it shows 12V or 5V while unplugged, there is a short to power in the harness. If the wiring tests perfectly, the sensor is internally shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Depressurize the System

    Relieve all compressed air from the pneumatic trailer brake system. You can do this by repeatedly pumping the brake pedals or by opening the drain valve (lanyard) on the bottom of the pneumatic air reservoir. Do not remove the sensor while the system is under pressure.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the pneumatic trailer brake pressure sensor on the air reservoir or the trailer brake control valve manifold.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor. Using an appropriately sized wrench, unthread the faulty pressure sensor from the port.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM pressure sensor into the port. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can damage the pneumatic valve body).

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor until the locking tab clicks. Reconnect the tractor's battery.

  7. Test the System

    Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build up system pressure. Spray a mild soapy water solution around the base of the new sensor to verify there are no air leaks.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use the tractor's AFS Pro display monitor or a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 1086-03 fault code from the UCM.
