1090

Case IH 1090 – Armrest Controller: Auxiliary 5th remote valve control switch (Extend position) has failed

Issue description

The controller detects an implausible signal from the 5th remote valve switch in the "Extend" direction, typically caused by the switch being mechanically stuck, a short circuit to power or ground, an open circuit in the switch wiring, or an internal failure on the controller board itself.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX240, MX255, MX285, 235-340 Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (280, 330, 380, 430, Quadtrac)
  • Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 5th remote valve control switch/lever on the armrest console for physical damage, binding, dirt, or spilled liquids causing it to stick.

  2. Disconnect the switch and perform a continuity test in neutral, extend, and retract positions (continuity in neutral for Extend indicates an internal short).

  3. Check the harness connector for a 5V reference signal and a good ground from the Armrest Controller with the key ON.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the switch and the Armrest Controller for chafing, pinched wires, or corrosion at the connector pins.

  5. If the switch and wiring test perfectly, verify the Armrest Controller board for burned-out circuits (a known issue on high-hour tractors).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Remove trim panels

Remove the retaining screws securing the armrest console trim panels. Carefully lift the cover to expose the internal wiring and the Armrest Controller module.

  3. Locate switch

Locate the 5th remote valve control switch assembly.

  4. Disconnect switch

Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch.

  5. Replace switch

If the switch is faulty: Remove the mounting clips or screws holding the switch in the console bezel. Install the new remote valve control switch, secure it, and plug in the connector.

  6. Replace controller

If the Armrest Controller is faulty: Disconnect all main harness connectors from the Armrest Controller board. Remove the mounting hardware and extract the module. Install the new or remanufactured Armrest Controller and reconnect all harnesses securely.

  7. Reinstall panels

Reinstall the armrest trim panels and secure them with the retaining screws.

  8. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  9. Clear fault code

Turn the key to the ON position. Access the tractor's diagnostic menu to clear the stored 1090 fault code.

  10. Test repair

Test the 5th remote valve by actuating the switch in both the Extend and Retract positions to verify the repair. (Note: If the entire Armrest Controller was replaced, a dealer may need to use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to calibrate the new controller and remote valves).
