11

Case IH 11 – TRANS: Transmission master clutch potentiometer open circuit or short to ground.

Issue description

The controller is not receiving a valid signal from the clutch pedal's position sensor, either because the wiring is broken (open circuit) or the signal wire is shorting out against the chassis/ground.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • JXC
  • Magnum 235-340
  • STX 450
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Farmall
  • Quantum
  • JXU
  • JXN
  • JXV
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T8.xxx Series

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage and battery condition, as low voltage can cause the 5V/8V sensor network to drop and trigger false faults.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the clutch pedal potentiometer to the transmission controller for chafed wires shorting against the frame or broken wires.

  3. Disconnect the potentiometer at the clutch pedal and use a multimeter to verify it is receiving the 5V to 8V reference voltage from the ECU.

  4. Inspect the sensor for extreme dirt buildup or physical damage from vibration that could cause sensor drift.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

Locate the master clutch potentiometer, which is mounted directly to the clutch pedal assembly in the cab.

  2. Remove the Old Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector and unbolt the failed potentiometer from the pedal linkage.

  3. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new OEM potentiometer and reconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Perform Calibration

After replacing the sensor, you must perform a transmission clutch calibration cycle using the tractor's onboard display or a dealer diagnostic tool (like Jaltest).
