Case IH 110 – TRANS: Mid-range clutch solenoid or its wiring has failed open or shorted to ground

Issue description

The controller has detected a voltage or resistance irregularity in the circuit responsible for actuating the mid-range clutch. An "open" condition typically means a broken wire, a disconnected plug, or a burnt-out solenoid coil. A "shorted to ground" condition means the power wire is touching the machine's chassis (often due to chafed insulation) or there is an internal short within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness and the connector at the mid-range clutch solenoid for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafed wires shorting against the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect the mid-range clutch solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins. If it reads out of limits (infinite resistance/open or zero resistance/shorted), the solenoid coil has failed.

  3. Disconnect the harness at the Transmission Controller and at the solenoid. Test the specific circuit wires for continuity end-to-end, and check for continuity to ground (which would confirm a short to ground).

  4. If the solenoid coil tests within spec and the wiring harness is completely intact with no shorts, verify if the Transmission Controller itself has an internal failure on that driver circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (refer to the specific model's service manual for the exact location of the mid-range clutch valve on the block).

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the mid-range clutch solenoid.

  4. Remove the Faulty Component

    If only the coil is faulty, remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem and slide the old coil off. If the entire cartridge valve is being replaced, clean the area around the valve to prevent debris from entering the transmission, then unthread the valve body from the manifold.

  5. Install the New Part

    Slide the new coil onto the stem (or thread the new valve into the block) and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid. Ensure the connector clicks and locks securely.

  7. Re-calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Clear the stored fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic display. Depending on the tractor model, you may need to perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often found in the H-Menu) so the controller can learn the fill times for the new solenoid.

  8. Test

    Test drive the tractor, shifting through the mid-range gears to ensure smooth engagement and verify that Code 110 does not return.
