Case IH 1100 – Armrest Controller: Aux 5th remote valve control switch (Retract) is failed in the Armrest Controller
Issue description
The controller is detecting an electrical fault—such as a short circuit, an open circuit, or a switch physically stuck in the closed 'Retract' position—on the circuit dedicated to the 5th auxiliary remote hydraulic valve switch.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Case IH Magnum Series (MX210, MX230, MX240, MX255, MX285, 215, 255, 290, 305, 315, 335)
- Case IH Steiger Series (280, 330, 435, etc.)
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Optum Series
Check the cause
Physical Inspection: Check the 5th remote valve control switch on the armrest. Ensure it is not physically stuck, binding, or packed with dirt/debris holding it in the 'Retract' (bottom) position.
Wiring & Connector Check: Remove the lower cover of the armrest console. Inspect the wiring harness and the specific connector going to the 5th remote switch. Look for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires shorting against the armrest frame.
Switch Continuity Test: Using a multimeter, test the switch to ensure it shows an open circuit when at rest and closes properly only when pressed. If it shows continuity while at rest, the switch has failed internally.
Controller Verification: Verify that the armrest controller is receiving proper voltage and that the CAN bus communication lines (yellow and green wires) are reading correctly (typically around 2.4V to 2.5V). If the switch tests fine but the code persists, the fault may lie within the Armrest Processor Module itself.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Armrest Internals
Remove the bottom cover of the armrest console. This is typically secured by 5 or 6 Allen head screws.
Disconnect the Switch
Locate the 5th remote valve control switch assembly. Carefully unplug the electrical wiring connector from the bottom of the switch.
Remove the Switch
Remove the two screws holding the remote lever/switch assembly to the armrest mounting plate.
Install the New Part
Insert the new 5th remote switch into the armrest plate and secure it with the mounting screws.
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness connector back into the new switch.
Reassemble
Reinstall the lower armrest console cover and tighten the Allen screws.
Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear any stored fault codes. Test the 5th remote valve for proper extend (top push) and retract (bottom push) operation.
