11021

Case IH 11021 – STEERING Controller: Voltage measured on the FRONT_STEER potentiometer is out of range low.

Issue description

The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the front steering angle (articulation) potentiometer that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the sensor wiring, a disconnected or broken harness, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • STX-275
  • STX-325
  • STX-375
  • STX-440
  • STX-500
  • Steiger 280
  • Steiger 330

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the front steer potentiometer (located near the front axle/articulation pivot joint) and its wiring harness for physical damage, packed debris, or disconnected pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check the harness side for the standard 5V reference voltage and a solid ground.

  3. Check the signal wire for continuity to the steering controller and ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  4. Ensure the pivot shaft is not bent and that there is no excessive drag or lack of lubrication in the steering pot cover, which can cause the sensor to bind or fail prematurely.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the front steering angle potentiometer on the steering linkage/articulation joint.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the potentiometer.

  4. Remove the mounting bolts/screws securing the potentiometer and its holder bracket.

  5. Remove the faulty potentiometer, taking care to note the orientation of the rotary pivot shaft.

  6. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the mechanical linkage aligns perfectly with the sensor's rotary input.

  7. Reinstall and tighten the mounting hardware.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Reconnect the battery and perform a steering calibration procedure.

You must perform a steering calibration procedure ("Checking and Centering Steering Potentiometers") via the tractor's diagnostic display to teach the controller the new sensor's center, left, and right voltage limits.
