Case IH 11023 – Steering Control Module (Nav Controller), Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), or Transmission/Chassis Controller: Voltage measured on low side of the FRONT_STEER potentiometer is out of range
Issue description
The controller is detecting an abnormal voltage on the ground circuit of the potentiometer, which typically indicates an open circuit, broken wire, high resistance due to a corroded connector, or a short to voltage on the ground wire.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the front steering potentiometer for corrosion, damaged pins, or loose connections
Disconnect the sensor and measure the voltage on the low side (ground) pin of the harness connector with a multimeter (key on, engine off). It should read near 0V (grounded to the ECU). If it shows voltage or an open circuit, trace the harness back to the ECU to find the break or short.
Verify the high side pin is receiving a steady 5V (or 8V, depending on the specific system) from the controller.
Measure the resistance of the potentiometer itself. The resistance should increase and decrease smoothly without any dropouts or spikes as the steering is turned from full left to full right.
Repair steps
Power down machine
Power down the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Disconnect wiring harness
Disconnect the wiring harness from the front steering potentiometer.
Repair wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue (e.g., an open ground wire), repair the damaged wire or splice in a new connector pigtail.
Remove faulty potentiometer
If the wiring tests good but the potentiometer failed the resistance sweep test, unbolt the mounting hardware and disconnect the mechanical linkage attached to the potentiometer.
Install new potentiometer
Install the new steering potentiometer and reattach the mechanical linkage.
Perform steering calibration
Perform a steering calibration procedure using the machine's in-cab display or a diagnostic service tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) so the ECU learns the new voltage values for dead-center, full-left, and full-right steering angles.
