111

Case IH 111 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Controller Failure — Hardware Failure

Issue description

This fault code indicates a critical internal error within the engine controller. It is triggered when the module detects a memory hardware malfunction, a read/write error internal to the ECM, or an internal microprocessor communication/voltage supply failure. The engine may run rough, die unexpectedly, or fail to start entirely, and the red STOP ENGINE warning lamp will illuminate.

Applies to these machines

  • STX275
  • STX325
  • STX375
  • STX425
  • STX440
  • STX450
  • STX500
  • Axial-Flow series combines

Check the cause

  1. Connect all components and turn the key switch to the ON position.

  2. Connect a recommended electronic service tool (such as Jaltest or Cummins INSITE) to read the fault codes.

  3. Verify if Fault Code 111 is Active or Inactive.

  4. If the code is Active, the ECM has suffered a fatal internal failure. If the code is Inactive, check the inactive counts and verify if there are any performance-related complaints (such as intermittent stalling) before condemning the module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect batteries

Disconnect the tractor's batteries to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate ECM

Locate the ECM. It is typically mounted on the left side of the engine block (intake manifold side), often behind the fuel filter.

  3. Disconnect wiring

Disconnect the engine wiring harness connectors from the ECM.

  4. Remove ECM

Unbolt the ECM from its mounting bracket (usually secured by heavy hex bolts and spacers).

  5. Install replacement ECM

Install the replacement ECM and reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  6. Program ECM

The new or remanufactured ECM must be flashed/programmed with the correct calibration file for your specific Engine Serial Number (ESN) and tractor model.

  7. Validate repair

Reconnect the batteries. Perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute. Verify via the diagnostic tool that Fault Code 111 has changed to INACTIVE and the red STOP ENGINE lamp has turned off. Clear the inactive codes.
