Case IH 111 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU): High range clutch solenoid or its wiring failed open or shorted to ground.

Issue description

The controller has detected a circuit interruption. The system is seeing either an open circuit (such as a broken wire, disconnected harness, or a burnt-out solenoid coil) or a short to ground (a chafed wire touching the chassis) on the circuit that controls the high range clutch solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Test Solenoid Resistance: Disconnect the electrical connector at the high range clutch solenoid and measure resistance across the coil pins (should be 8-11 Ohms).

  2. Evaluate Solenoid: If resistance is outside the 8-11 Ohm range (e.g., infinite/OL), the solenoid has failed internally.

  3. Test for Shorts: If the solenoid tests good, disconnect the main transmission controller connector (e.g., UCM connector X-950).

  4. Measure Voltage/Ground: Turn ignition ON and measure voltage between the harness connector pins (e.g., X-643 pin 1 and pin 2) and chassis ground to check for an unwanted short to positive voltage or a dead short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Park machine

    If the solenoid is faulty: Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the transmission powershift valve block (typically on the side of the transmission housing) and identify the High Range Clutch Solenoid.

  3. Clean area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid.

  5. Remove solenoid

    Remove the solenoid retaining nut and slide the coil off, or unscrew the entire solenoid cartridge valve from the manifold depending on the specific valve block design.

  6. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid cartridge with clean hydraulic oil.

  7. Install new solenoid

    Thread the new solenoid into the valve block. Caution: Do not over-torque hydraulic solenoids. Standard Case IH clutch solenoid torque specs are approximately 18 ft-lbs for the cartridge and 5 to 6 ft-lbs for the retaining nut.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the transmission controller and test-drive the tractor in high range to verify the repair.

  10. Trace wiring harness

    If the wiring is faulty: Trace the wiring harness from the high range clutch solenoid back to the transmission controller.

  11. Inspect wiring

    Inspect for pinch points, chafed insulation rubbing against the transmission casing, or corrosion inside the connectors.

  12. Repair wiring

    Repair the damaged wire(s) using weather-sealed splice connectors or replace the damaged harness section.
