Case IH 1117 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Battery voltage too low, or the controller was not allowed to power down correctly.
Issue description
The primary unswitched power supply to the module dropped below a calibrated limit while the keyswitch was in the "ON" position, or the module's power-down sequence was interrupted by a premature shutdown (loss of battery supply). This often results in the engine shutting down and refusing to restart, or power-down data (like trip and fault information) failing to save to permanent memory.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MX Magnum
- TG Series
- CNH equipment utilizing Cummins ISX or ISM engine platforms
Check the cause
Check the cranking voltage with a battery load and voltage test (under 6 volts indicates a battery issue)
Inspect the engine ground stud next to the starter motor to ensure cables are clean and tightly clamped
Inspect the starter ground, jumper cable to the frame, and cab grounds on both sides of the engine compartment for tight, bare-metal connections
Inspect the OEM power harness at the ECM to ensure the wiring harness is not putting physical tension on the connector
Measure the resistance from the keyswitch ignition post to the keyswitch input SIGNAL pin of the OEM harness connector (should be less than 5 ohms)
Verify that the OEM power harness fuse is installed correctly and not blown
If all wiring and grounds are perfect but the engine exhibits shutdown complaints while driving, suspect cracked solder joints inside the ECM (per TSB 100064)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn the keyswitch OFF and disconnect the batteries to safely work on the electrical system.
Clean and Tighten Connections
Remove any corrosion from the battery terminals, engine ground stud, starter ground, and frame grounds. Reattach them, ensuring they mate cleanly to bare metal, and tighten them securely.
Replace Batteries
If the batteries failed the load test or showed severely low cranking voltage, replace them.
Relieve Harness Tension
If the OEM harness is pulling on the ECM power connector, tie-strap the harness to the L-bracket directly above the ECM power connector to relieve the tension.
Repair Wiring
If the keyswitch input circuit showed high resistance (over 5 ohms), repair or replace the OEM power harness.
Replace the ECM
If all grounds, batteries, and wiring are confirmed good but the engine continues to shut down and log code 1117, replace the ECM. Internal cracked solder joints cannot be visually inspected or repaired in the field.
Clear the Fault Code
To validate the repair, start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute, then shut it down. Turn the keyswitch OFF and allow the ECM to completely power down. The fault code status will change to INACTIVE and can be cleared using a diagnostic service tool.
