Case IH 112 – TRANS: Reverse clutch solenoid or its wiring has failed open or shorted to ground
Issue description
The controller is monitoring the electrical circuit that commands the reverse clutch to engage. It has detected either an 'open' (a broken wire, disconnected plug, or a burnt-out solenoid coil) or a 'short to ground' (a bare wire touching the tractor's chassis or an internal short within the solenoid body itself).
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- MX Magnum series
- TG series
- Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
- Steiger
- Maxxum (MXM)
- Puma series
Check the cause
Visually inspect the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block, wiring harness, and connector for obvious signs of chafing, melting, or corrosion.
Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the harness and measuring resistance across the solenoid coil pins (should read 7 to 10 ohms at room temperature).
Perform a short-to-ground test by checking for continuity between each solenoid pin and the outer metal case (there should be no continuity).
Test the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the transmission controller pins to check for a broken wire (open) or a wire rubbing against the frame (short to ground).
Repair steps
Prep the Area
If the diagnostic tests point to a failed solenoid, thoroughly clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the reverse clutch solenoid in place and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block.
Install the New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM reverse clutch solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Carefully insert it into the valve block and tighten the retaining hardware to the specified torque in your model's service manual.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the solenoid was fine but the harness failed the continuity test, locate the damaged section of the wire. Splice and solder a new section of wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn on the tractor, navigate to the H-Menu or diagnostic screen, and clear the fault codes. Perform a functional test by shifting into reverse to ensure the code does not return and the clutch engages smoothly.
