Case IH 113 – Armrest Controller: Aux 2nd remote valve FLOW potentiometer is failed in the Armrest Controller

Issue description

The rotary potentiometer responsible for setting the hydraulic flow rate of the #2 auxiliary remote valve is sending an out-of-range voltage, an open circuit, or a short circuit signal to the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • MX Magnum
  • Magnum 215
  • Magnum 225
  • Magnum 235-340
  • Magnum 290
  • Magnum 310
  • Steiger 335
  • Steiger 380
  • Steiger 435
  • Steiger 450
  • Steiger 535
  • Steiger 550
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Open the armrest console and visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the #2 remote valve flow potentiometer for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or debris.

  2. Perform a potentiometer sweep test using a multimeter or the tractor's diagnostic display screen to monitor the output voltage/percentage while slowly turning the dial, looking for a 'dead spot' in the carbon track.

  3. Perform a component swap test by swapping the electrical connector from the #2 flow potentiometer with an adjacent one (such as #1 or #3) to determine if the fault follows the potentiometer or remains with the wiring harness/armrest controller board.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Power off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Disassembly

Remove the retaining screws to lift the upper housing/console cover of the armrest. This will expose the internal remote valve control pods and circuit boards.

  3. Removal

Locate the flow control potentiometer for the 2nd auxiliary remote valve. Disconnect its electrical wiring harness connector.

  4. Dismounting

Remove the retaining nut (typically a 3/8-32 nut) or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the armrest plastic housing.

  5. Installation

Insert the new potentiometer into the housing, secure it with the retaining nut, and plug in the electrical harness.

  6. Reassembly

Carefully reinstall the armrest console cover, ensuring no wires are pinched, and tighten the screws. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

Power on the tractor. You must perform an Armrest Controller / SCV (Selective Control Valve) calibration using the tractor's display monitor or a Case IH diagnostic tool. This allows the armrest controller to learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage limits.
