Case IH 113 – Transmission Controller (TCU): 4R Clutch Solenoid Shorted to +12 Volts or Wiring Failed Open/Shorted to Ground
Issue description
Fault code 113 indicates that the 4R Clutch Solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts (current sensed while the driver is off) or that the 4R clutch solenoid wiring has failed open or shorted to ground. The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the 4R clutch solenoid circuit. If the controller senses current flowing to the solenoid when the driver circuit is commanded off, it flags a short to +12V power. Conversely, if the current draw is lower than the acceptable limit when commanded on, it indicates an open circuit or a short to ground.

Check the cause
Perform a temperature sensitivity check: Note if the problem only occurs when the tractor is at operating temperature, which indicates the solenoid coil is likely starting to fail internally.
Perform a visual wiring inspection: Locate the transmission controller (under the cab fuse/relay panel) and inspect the wiring harness running to the transmission control valve block for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.
Perform circuit testing: Disconnect the harness at the 4R clutch solenoid and the transmission controller. Test the wire between them for continuity to +12V power (to confirm a short to power) and continuity to ground (to rule out a short to ground).
Perform a coil resistance test: Measure the resistance across the pins of the 4R clutch solenoid coil to determine if the coil itself has failed open or shorted internally.
Verify the transmission controller: If the wiring harness and solenoid coil test perfectly normal, the transmission controller itself may have an internal failure on the 4R driver circuit.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the 4R clutch solenoid.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic tests revealed a short to +12V in the harness, locate the damaged section of the wire. Cut out the damaged section, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-loom the harness.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
If the solenoid coil tested out of specification or is failing when hot, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining nut/bolts holding the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge, and slide the old coil off. Install the new solenoid coil and torque the retainer to OEM specifications. Reconnect the harness.
Replace the Transmission Controller (If Applicable)
If the controller is deemed faulty, access it under the cab fuse/relay panel, disconnect the multi-pin connectors, and swap the module.
Recalibrate the Transmission
After replacing transmission components, power on the tractor and use the cab display to enter the "TRANS SETUP" menu. Perform a full transmission clutch calibration (the display will guide you through the "Pedal Dn" and clutch fill processes, requiring you to increase engine speed to 2000 RPM) to ensure the TCU learns the fill times for the 4R clutch.
Clear Codes
Clear the fault code 113 from the system and test drive the tractor through all gears to verify the repair.
