Case IH 1139 – ARM (Armrest Controller): Engine Brake switch is failed
Issue description
The system has detected a failure, illogical state, or open/short circuit in the engine brake switch circuit. The engine brake switch is located on the Integrated Control Panel (ICP) on the right-hand armrest. Under normal operation, when this switch is activated and the difference between the commanded (throttle) speed and actual engine speed exceeds a 30% threshold, the software activates the engine brake.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Case IH Magnum Series (250, 280, 310, 340, 380, Rowtrac, CVT, PST)
- Case IH Steiger / STX Series (380, 430, 450, 500, 535)
- Case IH MX Magnum
- Case IH TG Series
- Case IH Puma Series
Check the cause
Inspect the engine brake rocker switch on the right-hand armrest console for physical damage, sticking, or heavy debris/chaff accumulation that could block internal contacts.
Access the underside of the armrest control panel and inspect the multi-terminal snap-in connector at the back of the switch for loose pins, corrosion, or backed-out wires.
Check the wiring harness between the switch and the ARM controller for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.
Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic display or a CAN-bus service tool to monitor the switch state. Toggle the switch manually to see if the ARM controller registers the state change (Open/Closed). If the state does not change but the wiring is good, the switch has failed internally.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental CAN-bus spikes.
Access the Switch
Go to the right-hand armrest console (Integrated Control Panel). Carefully pry up or unscrew the console bezel/faceplate to expose the underside of the switch matrix.
Disconnect
Locate the engine brake switch and carefully unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch housing.
Removal
The switch utilizes a snap-in housing layout. Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body and push it upward/outward through the top of the console bezel.
Installation
Insert the new OEM switch into the console cutout from the top, pressing down firmly until the retaining tabs lock it securely into place.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new switch, ensuring the pins seat fully. Reinstall the armrest console bezel.
Testing
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and clear the stored 1139 fault code from the ARM controller. Start the engine and test the engine brake switch functionality to ensure the code does not return.
