Case IH 114 – Armrest Controller: Aux 3rd remote valve FLOW potentiometer is failed in the Armrest Controller

Issue description

The system detects an open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-range voltage signal from the dial/potentiometer used to control the hydraulic flow rate for the 3rd auxiliary remote valve.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series (e.g., MX180, MX200, MX210, MX230, MX245, MX255, MX285)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 225, 250, 305, 310, 340)
  • Case IH Steiger / STX Series (e.g., STX275, STX325, 335, 450)
  • Case IH TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify Armrest Controller Connections: Ensure the main harness connector to the armrest controller (e.g., connector C137) is correctly installed, fully seated, and free of bent pins or corrosion.

  2. Inspect Wiring: Check the data bus wires, power wires, and ground wires leading to the armrest controller.

  3. Test the Signal Circuit: Check for a short to ground, open circuit, or high resistance connection on the specific signal wire for the 3rd remote flow potentiometer.

  4. Test the Potentiometer: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the potentiometer as you turn the dial. Look for 'dead spots' or erratic resistance readings (a common failure is a bad spot around a specific percentage, like 25%).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the armrest controller.

  2. Disassemble the Armrest

Remove the retaining screws on the armrest console to access the internal circuit boards and switch pods.

  3. Locate the 3rd Remote Flow Potentiometer

Identify the specific potentiometer linked to the 3rd SCV flow dial.

  4. Replace the Component

If the potentiometer is serviced separately: Unplug or desolder the failed potentiometer, remove its retaining nut (usually a 3/8-32 nut), and install the new potentiometer. If the potentiometer is integrated: On many modern Case IH boards, if the potentiometer cannot be individually replaced, the entire remote valve switch board/module must be replaced.

  5. Reassemble

Secure the potentiometer, reattach the armrest covers, and reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibrate

After replacing an armrest SCV component, you must perform a calibration of the armrest remote valves using the tractor's display monitor so the controller can learn the new minimum and maximum potentiometer values.
