Case IH 115 – ENGINE (ENG): Engine Speed Sensor (8.3, 9 Liter) or Cam Sensor (15 Liter) is failed

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost the signals from the magnetic pickup sensor. When this sensor fails, the ECM cannot accurately determine the engine's RPM or camshaft position, which can lead to the engine cutting out, stalling, or being de-rated.

   Inspect the engine wiring harness and the 3-pin connector at the Engine Speed Sensor for shorts, open circuits, or corrosion.

   Check the magnetic pickup sensor clearance from the tone wheel on the cam gear. If mounted too close, it can physically contact the tone wheel (a .020 shim may be required to back it out).

   Check tone wheel runout using a dial indicator (maximum specification is .002 inches). Excessive runout (e.g., .033 inches) indicates a warped tone wheel or walking cam gear, which will continuously trigger the code even with a new sensor.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor. On 8.3L and 9L engines, it is typically located on the outboard side of the engine near the injection pump or timing gear housing.

   Disconnect the Harness

   Unplug the electrical connection from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unscrew the retaining bolt(s) and pull the engine speed sensor out of the mounting boss. Inspect the tip of the old sensor for physical damage or scoring, which indicates it was hitting the tone wheel.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the replacement sensor. If your diagnostic checks indicated the need for a shim to maintain proper tone wheel clearance, install the shim between the sensor and the mounting boss.

   Secure and Reconnect

   Tighten the retaining bolt and plug the wiring harness back in.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key on and use the tractor's AFS Pro display or a CAN-bus diagnostic tool to clear the stored ENG 115 fault code. Test run the machine to ensure the code does not return.
