Case IH 119 – Armrest Controller (ARM) or Tractor Multi-Function (TMF) Controller: Auxiliary 4th remote valve FLOW potentiometer has failed

Issue description

The potentiometer is the dial/switch located in the cab that allows the operator to adjust the hydraulic flow rate to the 4th rear remote valve. The fault triggers when the controller detects an out-of-range signal (voltage too high, too low, or an open/short circuit), meaning the system can no longer accurately read the operator's flow setting.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • Steiger 4WD Series (e.g., 335, 380, 430, 500, Quadtrac)
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the code is active and specifically points to the 4th remote flow potentiometer.

  2. Perform a sweep test on the physical dial to check for 'dead spots' or bad spots in their sweep (e.g., failing around the 25% mark).

  3. Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the potentiometer to the Armrest Controller board for pinched wires, broken connections, or loose pins.

  4. Using a multimeter, verify that the potentiometer is receiving its 5V reference voltage from the controller and test the resistance to ensure it matches OEM spec (typically 1000 Ohm or 3000 Ohm).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the Armrest Controller.

  2. Access the Armrest

Remove the retaining screws to open the right-hand armrest console/multi-function handle housing.

  3. Locate the Component

Locate the specific flow control potentiometer for the 4th auxiliary valve on the printed circuit board/panel.

  4. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector harness from the back of the faulty potentiometer.

  5. Remove Hardware

Remove the retaining nut (often a 3/8-32 nut) and washer holding the potentiometer to the console panel. Pull the old potentiometer out.

  6. Install New Part

Insert the replacement potentiometer, secure it with the retaining nut and washer, and reattach the control knob.

  7. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the new potentiometer.

  8. Reassemble and Calibrate

Reassemble the armrest console, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes. If required by the specific model's service manual, perform a remote valve calibration via the tractor's display monitor.
