Case IH 119 – Transmission Controller: 5R Clutch Solenoid Shorted to +12 Volts
Issue description
The 5R clutch solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts, and current is being sensed while the driver is off.

Check the cause
Locate the Transmission Controller: It is typically located underneath the fuse/relay panel inside the cab.
Visual Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the transmission valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause a short to a neighboring +12V wire.
Check for Short to Power: Disconnect the harness at the 5R clutch solenoid and at the transmission controller. Turn the key ON. Use a multimeter to measure voltage on the 5R signal wire. If +12V is present, the wiring harness is shorted to power and must be repaired.
Test the Solenoid Coil: Measure the resistance across the pins of the 5R clutch solenoid. If the resistance is out of specification (near zero ohms), the coil is internally shorted.
Controller Test: If the wiring harness tests good (no shorts to power) and the solenoid coil resistance is within spec, the transmission controller itself has likely failed internally.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the transmission housing and identify the 5R clutch solenoid.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, trace the wire back to the cab. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid coil is shorted, clean the area around the valve block to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Unbolt and remove the faulty 5R solenoid. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque to OEM specifications.
Replace the Controller
If the controller is the culprit, remove the fuse/relay panel cover in the cab, unbolt the transmission controller, and swap it with a new unit.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Turn the key on and verify if the fault code changes from Active to Inactive.
Transmission Calibration
Because a clutch control component was serviced, you must perform a transmission valve calibration. Access the "TRANS SETUP" menu on the cab display, ensure the transmission fluid is at operating temperature, and follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the fill times for the clutch valves.
