Case IH 120 – Transmission Controller (TCU): 4F (4th Forward) clutch solenoid is shorted to +12 Volts
Issue description
The system is detecting current flow while the driver (the controller's output signal) is commanded OFF. The transmission controller monitors the current draw from the clutch solenoid circuits. If voltage/current is sensed on the low side of the coil when the controller is not actively supplying power to engage that clutch, it flags a short-to-power condition. This prevents the transmission from operating correctly and can cause unintended clutch engagement or erratic shifting.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission controller, 4F clutch solenoid, and wiring harness for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could introduce +12V into the circuit.
Perform a voltage check at the harness-side connector with the key ON and accessories ON to ensure no voltage is present (checking for a short to power in the harness).
Measure the resistance across the pins of the 4F clutch solenoid coil (~9.4 to 11.4 ohms at 40°F, or ~11.2 to 13.8 ohms at 120°F) to check for an internal short.
Check the male and female pins at the transmission controller harness connectors for bent, loose, or corroded pins that could cause bridging or shorting.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn the key switch OFF and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed +12V on the harness with the key ON, trace the wire from the 4F solenoid back to the transmission controller. Locate the chafed/shorted section and splice in a repair using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid failed the resistance test: Clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the 4F clutch solenoid. Unbolt/unscrew the faulty solenoid valve from the manifold. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission hydraulic fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use the tractor's display monitor or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the tractor and shift through the forward gears (specifically gears utilizing the 4F clutch) to verify the fault code does not return.
