Case IH 1201 – Instrument Cluster (IC) or Universal Control Module (UCM): Hydraulic Filter Restriction Switch Open Circuit

Issue description

The controller has detected an open circuit in the electrical circuit for the hydraulic filter restriction switch, pointing to a broken wire, a disconnected harness, or an internally failed switch.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)

  • SR150
  • SR160
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • SR210
  • SR220
  • SR240
  • SR250
  • SR270

  • TV380

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the hydraulic filter restriction switch (at the filter head) and wiring harness connector for disconnected pins, corrosion, or physical damage.

  2. Perform a switch resistance test: disconnect the harness and measure resistance across the switch terminals. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance), the switch has failed internally.

  3. Perform a harness continuity test: measure resistance through the signal wire using a jumper wire to connect the IC/UCM pin to a clean chassis ground. Check for an open circuit or short to ground.

  4. Check the hydraulic filter and the cooler return screen at the hydraulic reservoir for heavy restriction or debris.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Ensure the machine is turned off, the loader arms are lowered (or properly locked), and hydraulic pressure is relieved.

  2. Locate the Switch

Access the hydraulic filter housing. The restriction switch is threaded into the filter head.

  3. Disconnect and Remove

Unplug the electrical connector from the switch. Use a wrench to carefully unthread the restriction switch from the filter housing.

  4. Install New Switch

Thread the new restriction switch into the filter head. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads or the switch housing.

  5. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic tests proved the switch was good but the harness was open, trace the signal wire back to the IC/UCM and repair the break in the wire.

  6. Replace Filter

If the hydraulic filter is near its service interval, replace the spin-on hydraulic filter element and top off the hydraulic fluid.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn the key switch on, operate the machine, and use the service tool or instrument cluster to verify the active DTC 1201 has been cleared.
