12011

Case IH 12011 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller (Module XA): Power Supply Line Overvoltage

Issue description

This code indicates that the power supply voltage to the controller's internal power stage has exceeded the safe operating threshold. This is typically caused by an overcharging alternator, a short to a higher voltage source (Vbatt/Vcc) in the wiring harness, or an internal failure within the controller itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma Series: 150, 160, 165, 180, 185, 195, 210, 215, 225, 240
  • Magnum Series: 180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 225, 240
  • Maxxum Series: 100-140 & PROFI 4110-6140
  • Vestrum Series: 130

Check the cause

  1. Test the battery voltage and alternator output while the tractor is running to ensure the alternator is not overcharging (voltage should remain steadily between 12.5V and 14.5V; spikes above 15V can trigger this code).

  2. Enter the tractor's H-Menu diagnostic mode, navigate to the XA module (EPL), and use the H2 menu to view stored calibration values and check for voltage anomalies or accompanying codes (like 12014 or 12017).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EPL controller for chafing, melted insulation, or pins shorting to battery power.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage during testing.

  2. Address Charging Issues

If the diagnostic checks revealed an overcharging alternator, replace the alternator or voltage regulator before proceeding.

  3. Repair Wiring

If a short to battery voltage was found in the EPL harness, repair the damaged wires using an OEM harness repair kit and heat shrink.

  4. Clean Connections

Disconnect the main plug at the EPL controller. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure a secure, moisture-free connection.

  5. Clear Stored Codes

Reconnect the battery. Enter the H-Menu diagnostics and navigate to the H8 menu (Clear stored calibration/codes). Depress and hold the "m" button until the display shows "donE" to reset EEPROM values back to default. (Note: If you only want to erase codes without losing calibration, use the HC menu instead).

  6. Recalibrate the EPL

If the H8 menu was used or the controller was replaced, you must recalibrate the Electronic Park Lock using the H1 menu. Use the "h" and "m" buttons to calibrate the applied and released positions of the park lock until the "EPL applied" symbol is displayed.

  7. Replace Controller

If the alternator is charging normally, the wiring is intact, and the fault immediately returns, the EPL controller's internal power stage has failed. Replace the EPL controller and perform the H1 calibration procedure.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Electronic Park Lock (EPL) Controller Unit

    84220606, 84361212, 87488834, 84589406, 47513111, 47751590, 51445195

Exact part number depends heavily on the specific tractor model and serial number break. Requires H1 menu calibration upon installation.

  • Alternator Assembly

Replace if overcharging is the root cause of the overvoltage code.

  • CNH Electrical Connector/Pigtail Kit

Use if harness damage is found at the XA module plug.
