12011 - EPL

Case IH 12011 - EPL – EPL: Power Supply Line Overvoltage

Issue description

Voltage supplied to the module has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold. This is typically caused by an alternator overcharging the system, a voltage spike, or a wiring harness short circuiting to a higher voltage source.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Test the battery voltage while the tractor is running to check if the alternator is outputting excessive voltage (over 14.5V–15V).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EPL module, specifically checking pins A4 and C7 for shorting to the power supply voltage or ground.

  3. Inspect the shuttle lever for physical damage that could cause erratic voltage signals to the EPL module.

  4. Inspect the 30A EPL fuse and its receptacle for melting or arcing caused by voltage spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical repairs to prevent further module damage.

  2. Resolve the Overvoltage Source

If the alternator was found to be overcharging during diagnostics, replace the alternator or voltage regulator. If a short was found in the harness (Pins A4/C7), repair the damaged wires.

  3. Replace the EPL Module

If the overvoltage spike permanently damaged the EPL module, remove the faulty unit and install the replacement module.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Enter the tractor's H-menu diagnostics using the instrument cluster switches. Navigate to the XA module, then to menu H8. Perform the H8 operation to clear stored calibration values and erase all EEPROM error codes back to default.

  5. Recalibrate the EPL

Navigate to menu H1 (EPL Calibration Procedures). Follow the on-screen prompts using the 'h' and 'm' buttons on the cluster to calibrate the mechanical 'applied' and 'released' positions of the electronic park lock. Ensure the shuttle lever is in the park position during calibration.
