Case IH 12012 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller / Module XA: Electrical Motor Disconnected EPL

Issue description

The system has detected an open circuit in Phase A (PH_A) or Phase B (PH_B) of the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) motor, or that the motor itself is completely disconnected or has failed internally.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 170
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 185
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 200
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 215
  • Puma 225
  • Puma 230
  • Puma 240
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the battery was recently disconnected, as this can sometimes trigger EPL communication faults or require a reset.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the EPL controller (Module XA) and the EPL motor for any physical damage, breaks, or chafing.

  3. Check all relevant connectors for corrosion, backed-out pins, or loose connections, specifically the electronic parking brake connector (X745), electronic parking brake relay (X036), and parking brake switch connector (X121).

  4. Test the wiring for continuity to rule out an open circuit in the Phase A or Phase B power supply lines.

  5. Test the EPL motor internally for an open circuit using a multimeter.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the tractor

Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface and securely chocked, as you will be working on the parking brake system.

  2. Repair wiring or reconnect plug

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or disconnected plug in the harness, repair the wiring or securely reconnect the plug.

  3. Determine if motor replacement is needed

If the wiring is intact but the EPL motor tests open internally, the electronic parking brake actuator/motor must be replaced.

  4. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  5. Remove EPL actuator

Locate the EPL actuator assembly, disconnect its electrical connector, and unbolt the unit from its mounting bracket.

  6. Install new EPL actuator

Install the new EPL actuator and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Recalibrate EPL system

After repairing the wiring or replacing the motor, the EPL system must be recalibrated. Enter the diagnostic 'H' menu using the instrument cluster switches. Navigate to the XA module (EPL controller), select menu H1 (Calibration procedures), and follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the engaged and disengaged positions of the park lock.

  9. Clear fault codes

Clear the stored fault codes by navigating to the H8 menu (Clear stored calibration/error codes) and holding the 'm' button until 'donE' is displayed.
