Case IH 12013 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Electrical Motor Short Circuit To Ground

The power stage (Phase A or Phase B) of the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator motor has short-circuited to ground. The controller has detected that the electrical current intended to drive the park lock motor is finding a direct path to ground, preventing the actuator from functioning correctly.

   Use the instrument cluster switches to navigate to the 'H' menus for the EPL controller. You can use menu H9 for voltmeter diagnostics and menu HB to verify active/stored fault codes.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the EPL controller to the park lock actuator. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points where Phase A (PH_A) or Phase B (PH_B) wires might be touching the tractor chassis (ground).

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the EPL actuator motor. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the motor's power pins and the motor housing/ground. If there is continuity, the motor is internally shorted.

   Inspect the pins at the EPL module (such as pins A4 and C7, which are heavily utilized in the EPL circuit) for corrosion, bending, or shorting.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage during repair.

   Resolve Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged wire(s) or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Actuator (If Internally Shorted)

   If the motor itself is shorted to ground, unbolt and remove the defective Electronic Park Lock actuator from the side of the transmission. Install the replacement unit and torque to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect and Power Up

   Reconnect the actuator wiring harness and the tractor battery.

   Initialize / Calibrate the EPL

   Navigate to the instrument cluster's H1 menu (Calibration procedures) to initialize and calibrate the new Electronic Park Lock actuator.
